Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Get Rid of Your Excess Abdominal Skin

Factors such as pregnancy, significant weight loss, and aging can all contribute to a loosening of the skin around your abdomen, resulting in a stubborn protuberance. Contrary to what many may think, diet and exercise alone, while essential to maintaining a healthy weight, cannot reverse a loss of skin elasticity or restore a youthful firmness. An abdominoplasty procedure, or tummy tuck, is one of the most effective solutions for restoring a tighter, well-contoured figure.

The Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is an effective option for men and women whose shape could be enhanced by:

  • Removal of excess skin and stretch marks that occur after pregnancy and/or weight loss
  • Tightening of the abdominal wall with sutures to ‘flatten’ the abdomen

While the main goal of the tummy tuck is to rid the mid-section of loose, excess skin, we may recommend supplementing your surgery with liposuction to address any stubborn pockets of fat that may be contributing to a protruding belly.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

As with all areas of plastic surgery, outstanding results in tummy tuck surgery come from careful planning combined with meticulous surgical technique.

Each particular patient’s degree of skin laxity, level of abdominal wall strength, and pockets of resistant fat are going to vary. Consequently, every abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is going to vary slightly in the details. Planning a procedure that addresses all of the patient’s goals while allowing the surgical scars to be in hidden locations is key to a successful tummy tuck. Preoperative planning will determine management of the belly button, placement of the scar, and the amount and location of any liposuction. The length of the procedure varies from two to three hours.

Depending on the extent of surgery, an overnight stay may be recommended for nursing observation. Dr. Rhee and Dr. Archibald recommend having help at home for at least the first week after surgery, with a two-to-three week period away from work.
